Search for meteoritic GEMS I: Comparison of amorphous silicates in Paris and Acfer 094 chondrite matrices and in anhydrous chondritic interplanetary dust particles

Amorphous silicates in meteoritic samples are significant as potential surviving interstellar dust from the formation of Solar System. silicate-rich grains called GEMS, glass with embedded metal and sulfides, abundant anhydrous interplanetary particles some ultracarbonaceous Antarctic micrometeorites that have high presolar grain abundances. Some GEMS within these objects been confirmed to be presolar. GEMS-like material, consisting amorphous silicate opaque inclusions, has identified matrices primitive meteorites. We use specialized thin specimen preparation transmission electron microscopy methods compare material Paris (CM) Acfer 094 (ungrouped) chondrites anhydrous, chondritic particles. Specifically, we compared morphology, degree partial ordering, elemental composition dominant iron oxidation state. find materials show incipient ordering Fe-rich highly oxidized, while those fully amorphous, Fe-poor, anhydrous. From examination various routes for silicates, conclude is not it unlikely accreted primary retained its original structure since accretion. also presence chondrite matrix a reliable indicator degrees primitivity or pristinity even mild, complex alteration processes may significantly alter structure. Finally, propose searches precharacterized by enable direct comparisons
